Brunch with Bloggers: Sarah

I stumbled upon Sarah's wonderful blog, Chevrons & Stripes, over a year ago and have been hooked ever since. She has a wonderful aesthetic of "city meets beach" - it's warm and soft but also trendy and hip at the same time. A masterful balance, but she manages it effortlessly. This is best explained from her time living in NYC then Miami Beach and now back to NYC again (she has truly gotten the best of both worlds). I hope you enjoy my little chat with Sarah and make sure to check out her blog as well as her stunning home tour on Glitter Guide.

We're at brunch in your town. Where are you eating and what are you drinking/ordering?

I'm dining at Jeffrey's Grocery in my neighborhood and ordering the truffled egg omelette and an iced coffee.

Why did you start blogging and why do you keep doing it?

I started blogging after I moved to South Beach a year ago with my (now) fiancé. It was a difficult transition for me being a born and bred New Yorker / leaving my friends and family behind and I wanted a way to keep everyone up to date with what we were up to. It morphed into something completely different soon afterward and now it's more of a design diary where I share my aesthetic (which is constantly evolving). Plus we're back in NYC now and loving it ;)

What has been the most exciting thing to come from your blog?

Meeting fellow bloggers whose content I admire and developing amazing real-life friendships.

What is one tip that you would give other bloggers?

Though it can be so hard sometimes, try to maintain your unique voice. If that means stepping away from reading other blogs for a little bit, do it. I always feel the best about hitting publish on a post when I know it's my own idea - one that hasn't been influenced by a million other sites.

Your posts always look so graphically appealing! What do you use and how did you master it?

I use photoshop for absolutely everything that appears on my site. I wish I could say that there's a magic trick to putting together clean, well-designed posts but I still have a ways to go to get where I want to be. It's a time consuming program to use/ learn and I'm still picking up new tricks. I'm convinced that the ins and outs of photoshop are endless...

What is your day job?

I'm currently a full-time Interior Design student.

You recently decided to go back to school. What prompted this decision and how are you juggling all of your responsibilities?

My blog was a HUGE factor in going back to school. I was at a point in my life where I felt confused about where I wanted my career to go. I'm passionate about so many things - art, fashion, music, and of course interior design. Ultimately my blog helped me hone in on a field I felt like I could really excel in and above all, one I would love doing for the rest of my life.

In terms of juggling responsibilities, school takes priority over everything else. It's a huge investment both monetarily and time wise so to slack off would only be a detriment to myself. If that means going a day or two without posting on C&S then unfortunately, that's what has to happen. My blog will always be a priority but not necessarily the number one.

Okay, on to the fun stuff:

What stores do you love to shop at?

J.Crew is my go-to these days (I mean, have you seen the new Fall collection?) but I also try to shop at smaller boutiques as much as possible. I love walking around Nolita where you can wind up and down the quaint tree-lined streets and shop at some of my favorite NYC shops like Poppy, Steven Alan, INA (for vintage), and McNally Jackson (the best book store EVER).

Any major purchases recently?

Hm, does my couch count? I recently invested in a new, more stream-lined couch from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams in SoHo.

Anything you are currently coveting?

Ha, unfortunately I'm always coveting a million things. Have you seen my pinterest?! Right now, this chic brass table from Worlds Away is at the top of my list but quite out of my price range...

What are your go to beauty products?

I don't have a very intense or regimented beauty routine. I barely wear any makeup besides a quick brush of mascara and I'm out the door. I do have a little bit of a weakness for Chanel lip glosses though...

How do you relax?

My favorite way to relax is at my family's beach house on Long Island. The dogs get to run around on the beach, we BBQ and make s'mores over a bonfire, and everyone generally just lets loose. It's my version of utopia.

If you could only read two blogs, which ones would they be?

WOW. Of all the questions you've asked this is probably the hardest one... Can I list three? Dreams + Jeans, Note To Self, & Design Darling. I hang out with those gals all the time in the city, they're the best!
